Solar Eclipse Adventure

This trip is designed to offer our guests the chance to see our coastline at its most exquisite, on the one evening this century when the sky itself puts on a show too. The celebrated Cornish light has inspired some of our finest artists since the Victorian era, and we strive to place you in the best spots to enjoy this magical time known as the golden hour — this year, with the moon joining in.

Check-in is at 17:30, and we’ll depart Penzance at 18:00, right as the eclipse begins at 17:59. From there we head south, passing St Clemence Island and Mousehole while keeping a lookout for seals, continuing westward past Tater Du Lighthouse and the historic fishing hamlet of Penberth. We round Logan Rock into Porthcurno, the “Cornish Caribbean” and home to the Minack Theatre.

Next, we venture to the wild west, hugging the cliffs around Gwennap Head and into the hidden bay of Nanjizal, before reaching Land’s End itself — the southwestern tip of mainland UK — we will spend some time down at lands end hoping to spot some bluefin tuna breaching as we sit and watch the historical event of the solar eclipse, with the point of maximum eclipse at 19:13, when up to 96% of the sun will be covered.

From the Carn Bras reef and the iconic Longships Lighthouse, we’ll watch the light shift and the temperature drop as the moon crosses the sun, with the Cornish coastline bathed in that same famous golden light behind us. Eclipse glasses are provided throughout — please don’t look directly at the sun without them.

The eclipse ends around 20:10, and we’ll make our way back into Mounts Bay and Penzance harbour by approximately 20:30, keeping an eye out for dolphins, porpoises and seabirds along the way.

Due to the dynamic nature of our waters, the captain may adjust the route as necessary to ensure a safe and more pleasurable experience.

Eclipse glasses are provided for every guest and required for safe viewing. Please don’t look directly at the sun at any point during the trip without them, even when the sun is heavily covered.

Children are welcome on this trip at the adult price, but it isn’t recommended for under 10s — a substantial part of the trip involves sitting still to observe the eclipse.
